Biography

Joya Lee is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor-Candidate in the state of Virginia. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Sciences from Oregon State University and a Master of Social Work from Boston University. Joya has experience working with clients that struggle with symptoms related to individual and family addiction, abandonment, ADHD, anxiety, chronic illness, depression, divorce, insomnia, family conflict/blended families, grief, loss (including loss from overdose and suicide), life transitions, PTSD, CPTSD, trauma, personality disorders, and mood disorders. She has experience providing individual, group, and family therapy in a variety of settings, including hospital emergency rooms and detox units, residential and outpatient substance abuse treatment facilities, homeless shelters, the Community Service Board, the Adult Detention Center, and in a Drug Court program. In addition to therapy, Joya has extensive experience providing intensive case management services and connecting clients to treatment for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. She is also trained in crisis intervention and working with individuals that are at high risk for overdose.

Joya has experience and is comfortable working with clients from a multitude of ethnic/cultural backgrounds and with clients who have all kinds of unique lived experiences. Joya understands the importance of listening to truly hear what people have to say and the importance of creating a safe, non-judgmental environment where people can be themselves and feel comfortable to share what’s on their hearts and minds. She strives to take a compassionate, culturally sensitive, curious, holistic approach to therapy and values meeting each client where they’re at in their journey of healing and wellness.

Joya has a special interest in helping individuals and families impacted by addiction. She is skilled at using motivational interviewing and a strengths-based, person-centered approach to help people identify their personal goals for coming to therapy. Once goals are identified, Joya works collaboratively with her clients to create a plan to achieve their goals. Joya takes a trauma-informed, integrated approach to therapy and uses a variety of therapeutic modalities to help clients address the underlying causes of their symptoms and concerns. Joya truly cares about each client and their unique needs and genuinely hopes to help each client become the best version of themselves so they can lead fulfilling, meaningful, joyful lives.
